Welcome to October!
This is a busy month for grade four. We begin with a parent meeting Tuesday, October 7, 2014 to discuss the upcoming trip to DRUMHELLER. Your voice is important, so please be sure to come and have input as to how this trip will happen. Discussion topics will include: chaperones, financing, curricular ties, dates and more.
School photos are being taken on October 7, as well. I f your child is wearing 'fancy' clothes for photos, please send along a set of regular clothes to be worn after photos are taken.
Hot lunch and milk programs begin this month - if you did not purchase either yet, you will have to wait until November to begin. Deadline for November orders is October 24.
We will soon have our set timetable for the year - I will be sending home a copy of this as well as placing one inside of the agenda - glued inside.
For math this week, we are trying to wrap up the patterns unit with a unit exam on Friday. Your child will be bringing home a green duotang with review practise in it on Tuesday. If he/she hasn't, please remind them to do so.
Science has us continuing our Light unit. We will be discovering translucent, transparent and opaque objects as well as whether or not shadows move. We will be conducting several experiments outside, so be sure to have appropriate clothing for the weather.
In Language Arts, we are continuing to develop our vocabulary through our read aloud. We are also building on our writing skills through Quick Writes and personal narratives. We have spent some time developing our adjective and adverb banks and are now striving to incorporate these into our writing.
Social Studies - We are continuing our investigation of the different regions of Alberta. We will be using POPPLET to graphically organize information about each region. This information will then be shared in a presentation to our classmates.
Thanksgiving is this coming weekend, and we will be creating a unique craft for this season. We will also be having a heartfelt discussion about the things we have to be thankful for/about other than the day off school (Of course, from the children's perspective!).
The latter part of the month is slower for extra activities, but the learning intensifies. Please be sure your child has plenty of rest, water and healthy food. All of these contribute to a healthy child who is better able to learn.
Closing out the month will be our Halloween day. Students are asked to wear their costumes all day, but festivities will not begin until after lunch. There will be costume parade in the gym for the entire school, and then we will return to our class for our own activities.
