Happy snowy Friday!  Isn't this snow something?  Personally, I love it.  I know it causes a lot of trouble, makes it hard to get around, requires extra clothing...but it is so clean and quiet after a snow storm...peaceful. (Please don't throw a snow ball at me for saying this!)

We have had a jam-packed week of learning.  We have begun to work on our "Writer's Notebooks" which is more formal way of recording our 'noticings' which we will be using to assist us when we write - whether it is a poem, a narrative, a list or any other type of writing.  Writing  begins with recording the noticing of sights, sounds, smells, and an awareness of feelings.  We watched both Denise Fleming's and Eve Bunting's episode of "Meet the Authour" and have implemented  some of their strategies into our notebooks.

We have also worked on grammar, spelling - suffixes on words ending with cc-y (consonant, consonant, y),and reading comprehension. We will be continuing with these themes next week.

In math we are revisiting place value.  This is a complex concept which is fundamental to higher levels of math; therefore, we area spending extra time on attaining the concept to ensure future success.

In science we have begun preparations for our experiments.  We will be undertaking such experiments as: How much waste does our classroom make in a week? For this experiment, we will be collecting ALL of the items thrown into the garbage for a week and sorting it into specific categories and then analyzing the results.

Your child may ask to bring in a few squares of toilet paper for another experiment - please only send in 2 squares of toilet paper and write the name of the type of paper it is (example: Royal, Purex, Cottonelle...) on an accompanying piece of paper or in their agenda. We will be comparing the biodegradability of the types of toilet paper supplied by the chosen students.

Other students have volunteered to bring in supplies for another experiment - types of paper - please only send a small amount of the types as well.

Our final experiment  - for this time - requires the wrappers of a hamburger/cheeseburger, fries and a soft drink.  If your family does not go to fast food restaurants, please do not make a special trip just for this experiment.  There will be opportunities to share materials, and there is often extra supplied by classmates.  If you are the type of family who enjoys fast food restaurants, please keep all of the items the server provides to you with your order - except the food - and send it to school.  We will be comparing the amount of waste created by each fast food outlet for the same items.

I ask that students bring all experiment supplies to school by Monday, December 1 so we can begin the experiments before the Christmas break.  Thanks for helping out with these supplies.

In Social, we are wrapping up our regions section and will hopefully be moving on to the next unit after Christmas break.

We will be building graham wafer houses on December 16th in the afternoon.  If you would like to send in special items for your child to decorate his/her house, please have them at the school on December 15 so as to avoid disappointing a child with forgotten items.

Things to remember:
*Hot lunch orders are due this Sunday for the month of December.
*Christmas Concert is this Monday at 6:45.
*Early dismissal is next Wednesday - December 3.
*No school December 5 - PD day.
