June is Upon Us!

Hello,

We have made it to June!  Only 20 more school days and your child will be on summer holidays!

We have been quite busy in our classroom with both curricular activities and non-curricular activities.

Curricular:

Science - We have been working through our Plant Growth and Changes unit.  We have determined ways to sort a variety of plants through both characteristics and uses.  We have discovered why plants are important to humans and the environment, what the different [arts of plants are and their purposes, what different plants need to grow best, different ways that plants reproduce and how seed travel, how plants are affected by the environment in our community and how we can grow healthy plants.  It has been an intense few weeks with this topic!  We will be wrapping up this unit within the next few days, and students will be bringing home their plants on Friday.

Social - We have been discussing how immigrants came to Alberta and the contributions they have made to the development of Alberta.  We have completed a research project on Famous Albertans, and will be presenting these to some of the other classes within our school next week.  There will be more information coming about this.

Language Arts - We have been focussing on Fairy Tales and their structure.  We have spent the last few days creating fractured fairy tales.  We have also been working on handwriting - many students have done this before, so it is a review.  We will be continuing with handwriting lowercase letters this week, and hope to tackle capital letters next week continuing through to the end of June with these.

Math - We have been working on the concepts of fractions and decimals.  We have discovered what numerators and denominators are, and how these relate to the whole.  We have been working with tenths and hundredths, and will be continuing with these concepts this week.  We will also begin adding and subtracting decimal numbers and money.  Please ask your child to help with cost estimations the next time you are in a store - how accurate are they?

Non-curricular:

Bike safety - THANK-YOU to Ms. Wheatley who came for 80% of our biking days to help supervise!  We would not have been able to leave the school grounds without your help.  Thanks to all who helped their child get bikes to and from school - if your child's bike is still here, please come pick it up ASAP.

Track - There have been a large number of our students involved in training for the Track Meet which is held this Thursday at Riverview MIddle School. We look forward to seeing many of you at the track meet to cheer on our athletes!

Drama - Over half of our students were involved in the drama presentation "Serenade to Swine".  It was an awesome show - hopefully many of you were able to watch it this past Thursday after school.

Clay Guys - The grade 4 classes were privileged to create tipis with Dave from The Clay Guys.  We will be painting them this week and next, and sending them home within the month.

Golden Garbage Can - We Won!! Our class and 4F were co-winners of the Golden Garbage can for the month of May.  This was the last month the award will be given for this school year. Students received a cupcake, a candy and a small stuffed animal or fancy ball. Thanks Ms. Betty!

Yoga - We have had teacher Dawn teach us Yoga for one class each month.  She will be in with us again on June 3.
