November

Hello!  It's been a while...

LA - In grammar, we have been working on nouns - proper and common - identifying them and making them either plural or singular.  We have also been continuing with sentence structure and combining simple sentences.  This has proven to be a difficult concept, so we have been spending extra time on combining sentences.

In reading, we have continued to work on main ideas, and have also introduced the concept of INFERRING or making/drawing conclusions.  We are having a lot of fun with this right now and the students are able to make inferences quite well.  We will be continuing with this concept for a few more days, and then beginning to work on cause and effect.

In spelling/word work, we are continuing to work on words that have common long vowel sounds. The students have access to their activities through Spelling City online (log-in information is in the agenda).  If they have a chance to work on these from home, that will help them in the classroom as well.

Students are continuing to read for the 40 book challenge.  They are encouraged to read for fun often as this helps to develop both their comprehension and fluency skills.  By now, students should be reading about 20 -30 minutes per night as a general guideline.

MATH - We have completed our first unit in math, and you should have seen your student's test paper.  If you did not, please ask him or her about it.  We are currently working on place value to the ten thousands.  We have learned what the digits stand for, what their value is and why we need to use zeroes when writing numbers.  We have focussed on writing the numerals and words, numerals alone and expanded form.  We have been practicing with base ten blocks and pictorial representations.

We are moving into trading numbers and adding with re-grouping in one, two or three locations.  We will soon be moving into subtracting with re-grouping.

SCIENCE - We have wrapped up our first unit of WASTE and OUR WORLD as you now know by the test which was brought home yesterday for you to sign.  Most of the students did well on the test; however, I was surprised that  - according to the students - many families in their homes continue to throw everything in the garbage instead of recycling or reusing or re-purposing things.

SOCIAL - We have continued to work through the various natural regions of Alberta.  Each of the 6 regions was represented in a google slide presentation prepared by each member of the group.  We will be viewing these shortly.  There is a rubric by which the presentations will be individually marked, and these rubrics will be attached to each presentation.  I am currently experiencing some technical issues, and haven't been able to attach them yet.  I am working on it!

We are also beginning to explore Alberta's fossil heritage.  We have read about various fossils which have been found and where they have been found.  We are beginning to focus on how fossils have made Alberta important in today's world.  We will continue to work on these topics until Christmas.

Please check the daily agenda notes tab for our daily notes.  Also, the students write in their agendas for upcoming important events.

November 25 - Jersey Day and Raptors Spirit wear day.
December 2 - No school (PD day)
