Can You Believe It?

Hello,

Can you believe that it is nearly the end of the school year? Me, neither!

In Science we have finished our Wheels and Levers unit - which you saw pictures of in my last post. We have also completed the Building devices unit which many of you saw the various project  during our student -led conferences in March.  The students had a great time with their toy prototypes, and a few groups finished all four tasks of combining the marble track and vehicle and having the vehicle move the 2m before stopping.  These projects were awesome!

All of the students gained a vast amount of knowledge about constructing a mechanical device for a designated purpose using materials and design suggestions provided. They were also able to explore and evaluate variations to the design of a mechanical device demonstrating that control is an important element in the design and construction of that device.

We are currently working in the plant unit, and will be continuing with this until the end of the school year.

Social Studies has been focussed on the study of the First Nations people, the fur trade and all of the events and groups of people who contributed to the development of Alberta to the end of the fur trading era.

We have used a multitude of resources to help use gain understanding including Quizlet and Kahoot.  If you are unfamiliar with these two terms, please ask your student to show you what he/she has completed.

We completed a cool project on oral traditions of the native people using Adobe Spark which created a short video of an oral interview re-told by the students voicing over pictures they selected to go with the story.  These turned out very well, and you should ask your student to shop you the final product. They students can access these through Google classroom.

We will be continuing on with the study of the settlers and how they helped Alberta to develop into a province.

Math has been primarily focussed on multiplication and division.  We have also worked on Data Analysis, decimals and just touched on fractions.  The students are continuing to work on mastering the multiplication facts, and are encouraged to practice these at home as well.

We have been spending the last while focussing on division with remainders.  This is a hard concept to attain, and we will continue to work on it for the next few weeks.

Students who have internet access are encouraged to finish all assigned Mathletics components to help review and reinforce content taught in class.

LA has been multifaceted with both reading and writing components.  We have been working on sentence structure with proper noun-subject agreement as well as verb tenses.  We have been introduced to a few figures of speech such as similes and metaphors.  The students have written great poems using these figures of speech.  They have also written great Haiku, and are encouraged to share them with you from their Google Drive.

Our reading has been focussed on fluency and comprehension.  Students have read several stories from the Collections anthologies and then completed various projects to demonstrate their understanding.  We have also been building our vocabulary  through the various stories and the use of context.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you have regarding your child's progress.  I will be happy to discuss matters with you.

A few updates that are specific to grade 4 and our classroom:

  • Class photos are on May 24 (Wednesday) - These are the photos that show the entire class together in one photo.
  • Grade 4 Spring Photos are May 25 - These are the individual photos which students are encouraged to bring a prop for to help demonstrate a quality/interest/ trait that helps to define who the student is as a person.  Please keep props to a reasonable size and make sure they are school appropriate.
  • Our track meet is scheduled for June 6th at Riverview Middle School.  Please volunteer to help us with this event if your child is one of our athletes.  More hands makes light work!
  • There are some transition activities planned for the afternoon of June 9 at Riverview Middle School.  Permission forms should be posted soon for you to complete - I will let you know when they are posted.
  • Swimming lessons for our class will ONLY be for the first week of lessons.  We are scheduled for one hour lessons for the week of June 12 through June 16 (right after lunch).  Other classes will be having a half hour lesson for two weeks.  It is the same length of lesson only spread over less time.  We will all be utilizing the free swim time during the last week of school.
  • Warwa updates will be coming out soon.  The final cost has been determined as $40 per student, and most of you have already paid the $25 deposit which means that it will only cost $15 more.  This link is not yet on Powerschool, and this is for information only.  Once it is on Powerschool, we will let you know, and you can sign any final forms and make final payments at that time.  We do not have a final schedule, and once that has been given to us, we will be sharing an information package with you that will hopefully answer all of your questions.
I think this is all for now, enjoy the long weekend!
