September

Hello!

We have almost completed one full month of school! We've been very busy learning our new routines and remembering some old ones.  We are still in the old portable, but there seems to be some progress happening, and hopefully we will be part of the whole school before the snow flies (to stay!).

In Math, we have been working on Patterns and Relationships.  This includes topics such as identifying and extending patterns by adding on or counting back from a set number.  It also includes completing t-tables, identifying and extending shape patterns and identifying different attributes to make a pattern.  We will be continuing this topic for a few more weeks.

Social has had us discovering where in Canada Alberta is located.  Many of you have seen, signed and returned your student's quiz on Canadian provinces and territories.  Thanks to you for doing that promptly!  We are now discovering and researching the 6 physical regions of Alberta.  Each student is recording into his/her own passport (booklet) pertinent information for each region, after having read and discussed the specific topic with both a small group and an adult.  We will be continuing this for at least a few more weeks.

Lights and Shadows is our unit in Science.  We have discovered that light travels in straight lines, is received in our brains by cones and rods which help us see colour as well as objects/shapes and can be both reflected and refracted.  We are continuing to make discoveries about light and will learn about such things as opaque, transparent and translucent objects.  It is an exciting topic and we are completing many cool experiments - and Mrs. Spreen is sharing her magic.  Ask the students about my magic trick!

Language Arts - We have been beginning to complete some writing tasks in our writing journals as well as some KidBlog tasks.  If you would like to read your student's kidBlog posts, have him/her sign into the account from home using the google sign in and then he/she can share the posts with you.  Our writing tasks have been both using prompts and free writes.  Some of our students are awesome authours with a great sense of creativity!  I look forward to reading more of everyone's stories!
We have, also, been working on some reading skills.  Right now, we are developing stamina as readers and completing our first round of benchmark assessment using the DIBELS tool.  We will  begin to delve into more specific skill development after the assessments are completed.
