November Beginnings

Hello!

Thanks to all who ventured out for our Parent-teacher-student meetings.  It was great to get a few minutes to visit with you and show you what we have been working on thus far.  To those who have not yet managed to pop in, please email me and I will try to accommodate your schedule.

In Science, we have completed the Light and Shadows unit with the final test which you should have seen come home on Friday for most students - I still have 6 on my desk.  These were to be reviewed with you and then signed and returned to school. Thanks to those who have already returned them! We have just started the unit of Waste and Our World.  We have begun this unit with defining what garbage actually is, and what should be/could be re-cycled, re-used or re-purposed.  We have also discussed raw materials, pre-consumer waste and manufacturing.  We will be continuing with post-consumer wastes and moving in to durable, non-durable and disposable goods.  One of the best things about this unit is the field trip to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.  It is one of the most informative and eye-opening experiences our grade 4s have.  Our trip is scheduled for February 27, 2018.  We will be touring the facility with a bus and will not be taking parent chaperones.  I will send out more details as the time comes closer.

In LA, we are continuing to learn about nouns and pronouns in order to be able to begin the writing process of showing and not telling.  We will be continuing this for the remainder of this month and will be working with the writing theme for the rest of the year.  Shortly, the students will be introduced to this, and will be able to explain it to you.

We are continuing to work with Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) as our word work theory/philosophy.  It was amazing to me today as we were working through the meaning of 'pre-consumer' by breaking it down into the word parts, to see how much the students are retaining from approaching word studies in this manner. It was awesome!  We have the opportunity to have a well-experienced instructor with SWI come into our classroom in January to work with the students in a way that I am so excited about. He has offered to come to three of our classrooms at Robina - what an opportunity!  Again, I will provide more details as the time comes closer.

In math, we have begun the study of number sense.  We are currently studying place value with base ten blocks, written words, and expanded form.  We are also working on comparing and ordering numbers up to ten thousand.  Some students are working more slowly through the concepts than others, and I am very happy about this.  I would rather a student understands the concept than is on the same page as another. We are also continuing with our almost-daily timed multiplication fact quiz.  I ask the students to bring these home about once a week just to keep you apprised of the progress he/she is making. If you are not seeing the quizzes, please ask your student to bring them home.

We have just wrapped up our time dedicated to the study of the different physical regions of Alberta.  We created and played a KAHOOT! today - ask your child about it.  We have moved on to a discussion about fossils, and are in the process of listening to Bill Nye explain the way fossils came to be.  We will be discovering some of the different fossil types and special feature of fossils including rules/laws surrounding the m for the next while.

We are going to be beginning a week focus on Remembrance Day and the whys of this special day starting tomorrow.  Please join us on Friday as we hold our school wide ceremony beginning at 10:45.  If your student is a member of a uniform wearing organization, please encourage him/her to wear the uniform on Friday for the ceremony.  Remember, all grade 4 students will be participating in the ceremony as they recite the poem 'In Flanders' Fields'.  We will also have 2 chosen readers from our class at the ceremony.

Have a great week!  Remember that it is a long weekend coming up!
