October 1- 9

Hello,

It has been a while since I have written an academic blog, and today is the day to get it done.  It seems as though the last few weeks have slipped past with amazing speed.  We have accomplished a lot, and the students should be proud of the hard work they have done thus far.

LA - We have begun our Quick Writes, and the students appear to be enjoying them as they will ask to do one if I do not have it scheduled.  If you are unfamiliar with what a Quick Write is, please ask your student.

We are also working on editing skills and comprehension .  We have had many interesting stories which we have dissected using our highlighters!

We have also begun our 40 book challenge.  Many students have at least one book checked off of their 'bingo card' of genres.  One area that we need more practice is in the recording part of our Reader's Journal.  I understand that this is quite different than in previous years, but I hope it won't take too long to get into the new habit.

We have written a short story about what happened to the Great Pumpkin to delay his arrival in the pumpkin patch.  If any of you are Charlie Brown fans you may recognize the character of the Great Pumpkin.  The students wrote excellent stories and I look forward to reading more from these authours!

In math, we have completed the first unit on Patterns and Algebra.  We are using the new-to-us program of JUMP Math, and it seems that the students are responding well to the program.  You should have seen your student's test by now, and have recognized how well this unit went for the students. I have not seen results this positive for this unit in  a very long time.  There are many factors to take into consideration, but these students should be proud of themselves for the great work!

Social Studies has had us learning the basics of where Alberta is located in Canada as well as the other provinces and territories.. We will be continuing to learn about Alberta's geographic uniqueness and physical attributes.

We have completed 3 article summaries on our own for Current Events.  The summaries are time consuming but the students appear to be enjoying the activity. We have learned some very cool facts!

Our first Science unit has been Waste and Our World.  Students were asked to take their Science duotangs home this week to allow adults a chance to peruse the many experiments which we are undertaking in the next few weeks.  If you  have not had this opportunity, please remind your student to bring the duotang home.  There is one small homework assignment in this portion of the unit - RESEARCH TASK 1.  The students are asked to find out what happens to the garbage from their homes after it leaves the curb - or if you do not live in town, where does your garbage go?

In PE, we have been working on the skill of locomotion - different ways to move.  We have had several different stations to work through as well as many new (and old) games.

Our Art projects have  been focussed on the theme of FALL and the beautiful leaves that surround us at this time. There is one project which has not been Fall focussed - it was about Christmas!

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving and enjoy the extra time with your family!
