Week of Dec. 8 - 12

December 8 - 12, 2014

We have completed our experiment discovering how much waste our classroom creates in a week.  We collected everything that would normally be 'thrown out', sorted it into categories (we decided these together), and weighed each category. We discovered that we are wasting 4.8 kilograms (10.56 pounds) of food weekly!  We have decided we would try to eat more of the food brought in our lunched and to take home that which is not eaten rather than throwing it out.

We also began our 'Garbage Garden" to see which begins to decompose first - photocopier paper, newsprint, magazine paper, construction paper, fast food wrapper, Styrofoam or plastic food wrap.  We will be digging up the samples after the Christmas break to discover what has happened during the past month.

We will be discovering the other creators of waste in the next section of this unit.  We then have a few cool projects to complete to conclude this unit, a few days of reviewing and then a unit final by the end of January. If you wish to begin reviewing the unit with your child now, remind him/her to bring home his/her science duotang.

In math we are continuing with number sense.  We have been having some fun practice with the spelling of the words: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety and hundred.  By the end of this practice, each student should be able to spell these words correctly without prompting.

In LA we have been working on a "Santa stuck" story - ask your child to explain this.  It is quite a lot of fun!  We have also been focusing on reading comprehension and our double entry journals.

Social studies early in the week allowed us to glimpse each of the regions in our wrap up project  - a slide show.  Many of these were very well done showing us what makes each region unique.  We have moved on to the fossil history of Alberta and fossil fuels.
