Week of January 12 - 16

January 16, 2015

Hello, all!

We have had a very busy few weeks.  The weather has not been very nice - until this week - and so we have had a lot of indoor recesses.  This has led to many students with cabin fever.  Thank goodness we have this beautiful weather now and the students can burn off some of their energy outside!

Many of our students are involved in leadership projects such as the delivery of milk and hot lunches, SWAT (Student Wellness Action Team), and the Office team.  We applaud these students for their leadership, and encourage others to become involved as well.

Our Science unit of Waste and Our World has concluded.  we are reviewing the unit in preparation for the unit final on January 22.  Students have been encouraged to review at home as well, and they may have their duo-tangs in their backpacks tonight.  Please spend a few minutes with your child to help him/her prepare for the exam.

In Social, we are discovering alternate sources of power that may be more sustainable than gas and oil.  Your child has been working n a Google slide show to illustrate which source they believe is the best alternative.  Ask him/her to show it to you...they are developing nicely!

In LA we have been preparing for our Literature Circle by learning about many figures of speech, how to summarize, character traits, and other aspects of text.  We will begin the lit. circle next week using the book "Polar, the Titanic Bear" by Daisy Spedden.  It is a no-fiction story which is entertaining as well as informative.

In math, we are beginning to master the addition and subtraction of 3- and 4- digit numbers with re-grouping and without.  This is a complex task which requires a lot of thinking.  Your child may be bringing home some questions to work on over the weekend - please ask him/her if he/she has homework and if so, assist him/her to complete it.

We will be skating from January 26 through 29.  Monday to Wednesday we are skating at 11:15, Thursday we begin at 8:40.  If you can either help to tie skates or come skating with us, please do so!  Thanks in advance!

Grade 4 students will be going skiing at Rabbit Hill on February 2.  The information and permission forms have not yet been forwarded.  As soon as I have more information, I will be sending it home with your student.  Please mark this date on your calendar.

Rabbit Hill's policy has been that the skier is required to complete a lesson with their staff before the skier is allowed out on the hill.  If your child has never skied before, this is an excellent opportunity to learn.  We will be able to rent equipment fro the hill so there is no need to purchase anything other than a ski lift ticket. More details will be forthcoming...

Please remember that January 30 is a PD day, and no students are in attendance on that day.

Also, hot lunch orders and milk orders are available at: https://rbes.hotlunches.net

Please contact me with any comments or concerns you may have.

Have a great weekend!
