Weekly Update and Other News

Hello,

So the title is a little off as I realize it has been a bit longer than a week since I last posted.  My intentions are good...

By now you should have been able to review your child's report card.  Hopefully you are pleased with the progress h/she is making.  If not, please feel free to approach me to have a discussion about what we can do to help him/her be more successful.

As you are now aware, our ski trip which had been planned for today has been postponed until next Monday, February 9.  There is a new permission form which requires filling out due to the date change, but all funds paid for today's trip will be used for next week's trip so there is not an added cost. As I write this, the wind chill according to Environment Canada is -20. Next week, the forecast is for -1, much nicer for sure!

There is a second ski trip scheduled for March 2, 2015.  Please be sure to fill out the permission forms for this trip as well.

As our grade 4 year progresses, the students become ever closer to becoming grade 5 students.  As part of the transition planning for our students, Riverview Middle School (RMS) has invited us to be part of their pancake breakfast next Tuesday, February 10.  This will betaking place during school hours with the suggested itinerary as follows:

9:00 - 9:20 walk to RMS, eat pancakes, begin activities
       9:20 - 9:50 Tour RMS
9:50 - 10:25 Shared reading - RBES students paired with RMS students
       10:25 - 11:10 Activities in gym
11:10 -  RBES students return to their school

There will be permission forms for this walking trip, and it may already be online, but there is no cost for our excursion.  Please check while you are completing skiing forms to see if it is live.  I do not have access to check for it and so I apologize for not knowing this piece of information.

There will be a few more transition activities with RMS prior to our grade 4s leaving RBES, and as the activities come closer, I will be sharing information about them.

As hard as it is to believe, we are about half way through the school year - 5 months done, 5 months to go. We have covered a lot of curricular matter as well.

In Language Arts, we have been focusing on a novel called Polar the Titanic Bear  for a literature circle.  It proved to be challenging, but the students seemed to enjoy the story. We continue to complete quick writes and work on our writing skills along with editing skills and reading comprehension. Today, the students began a small group lit. circle using a common novel for their group. While they may be sharing the book and reading together, each student will be responsible for completing his or her own activities.  These should be completed by the end of February, and then we will be moving on to a new topic.

In Math, we have begun working through multiplication skills.  We will be continuing to progress through multiple digit multiplication and division in the next few weeks.  This is a complex concept, and you are encouraged to help your student master his/her basic facts of multiplication. (1x1 through 7x7)

In Social, we have been working on projects with alternate sources of power, the 3 main industries in Alberta - oil and gas, agriculture and forestry.  We are currently finishing a Lucidchart representing our knowledge about these industries.  Ask your child to show you his/her work in progress.

In Science, we have begun our Wheels and Levers unit - also known as simple machines. This is a short unit, and we should be finishing it by the end of February.  We will be learning about the 6 simple machines, and then we will be applying our knowledge in the Building Devices Unit.  Please start collecting toilet paper tubes, paper towel rolls, lids, tea tins or any other materials (recycled or re-purposed) that we may use to build in our next unit.  Please try to keep it to cardboard and plastic as we will be using tape and glue to hold our projects together. If you have a roll of duct tape, packing tape, masking tape or a similar type of tape that you are willing to donate to our building unit, we would be most appreciative.

Reminders:  *Early dismissal is this Wednesday - students will be dismissed about 2:15.
*There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday and Friday due to Teachers' Convention
*Skiing on Monday, February 9 from 8:30 - 4:30 please arrange for after                                 school pick up of your child as there will be no bus service a his time.
                   * Pancake Breakfast Tuesday, February 10
*Valentine's Day Celebration - Friday, February 13 Please remember there                          will not be an exchange of Valentine cards this year.
*There will be an informational letter coming soon regarding the Drumheller                         trip.  Please - if you are planning to come along, apply for your Criminal                            Record Check and Child Welfare Check soon because it may be a lengthy                            process.  It is my understanding these should be free because you are                               volunteering with the school.

As always, if you would like to speak with me regarding your child's school progress or any issues that may arise during the course of the school day, please call me at the school, email me or pop by to chat.

Have a great week!
