Happy New Year!

My/Our resolution before Christmas was to get better at writing this blog, and I/we had been doing well; however, I/we fell short of our goal.  We are going to try again...

Math- After an awesome two week trial period,we don't have Mathletics anymore! It was a great experience, but we are unable to subscribe at this time.  In our original math books, we started Distributive property and we are having a blast with multiplication.

LA - In LA we started using our knowledge of figurative language to 'pick it out' of stories we are reading.  Some of the types of figurative language that we are looking for are: similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperbole, personification, alliteration and allusion.

Science - We ended our third unit Wheels and Levers  this week with a unit final on Tuesday.  We started our fourth unit of Building Devices and Vehicles that Move  on Wednesday.  We have been comparing the pros and cons of various toys trying to determine what makes a good toy. The funny discovery we made today is that we think a toy that is:

  • safe
  • durable
  • encourages creativity and imagination
  • fun
  • requires no batteries or power
  • is environmentally friendly
  • is portable
  • is challenging and
  • promotes muscle development/physical activity
is the the best kind of toy to have.  This discovery really made the students stop and think about their toys and playing habits (think - electronic devices and the criteria list...)

Social - We completed the project that we have been working on which celebrates our community and the uniqueness of Devon to share with one of our classmate's family in Africa.  We hope they enjoy watching our show as much as we enjoyed making it - and we learned many new  techniques to make videos and use voice overs.

We have resumed our discoveries of the people who were in Alberta first, and their traditions of oral language story telling as well as writing on stone and on buffalo robes.  We wrote out own stories as if we were Aboriginal people back in the day and then wrote them using symbols onto buffalo robes (pretend ones of course!).

We do not need a Current Events article for the 29 as it is a PD day.

Other important notes:

  • Beach Day is next Wednesday (27th)
  • Report Cards come home Thursday (28th)
  • No school next Friday (29)
  • Winter Walk Feb 3. - permission forms are now online.
  • Early dismissal February 3
  • No School Feb. 4 and 5 due to Teachers' Convention.
  • SKIING permission forms are now available on line. One form covers both trips as well as all alternate dates if we need to reschedule.
Hope this has left you feeling more informed.  If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school or by emailing me at the school email address.

Have a great weekend!
