December

Hello!

It has been a long, cold month!  Thankfully the weather change allowed students to have outdoor recesses this week - they have certainly enjoyed being outside!

Our month began with our Christmas Concert first and foremost.  Once we had our actual performance, our routines were restored, and we accomplished a lot of work.  We have been learning a lot in spite of the quickly approaching holiday break.

LA - We have been working on handwriting - this is ongoing, and students progress at their own pace.  Students who have confidence in their abilities are progressing quickly while those less sure are taking their time to learn the proper formations before moving on.  Students are encouraged to use handwriting in their daily notes once they have regained or gained their confidence.

We have continued to work with nouns in grammar.  We have been making plurals, noticing odd plurals (rule breakers) and making singulars from plurals.  The students will be beginning with adjectives after the Christmas break.

We continue to work on our writing skills as well.  This week, we have been wruiting a story based on a picture prompt.  It has been quite interesting to see how differently the students interpret the picture.  All students are expected to be using proper capitalization, punctuation and formatting.  We are continuing to master these writing skills.

Math - We have continued to work with multiple digit addition with and without re-grouping.  The students have mastered this skill up to the ten thousands position.  Students are encouraged to continue practicing basic addition facts to speedy mastery so as to improve their abilities with more complex operations.

We have also been working on multiple digit subtraction with and without re-grouping.  Subtraction with re-grouping has been challenging for most students and we will be continuing to master this concept after the Christmas break.

Mathletics, Xtramath and Prodigy are all good websites that students are encouraged to use over the break to help retain or perhaps gain skill in the concepts we have covered thus far.  The students' passwords and usernames are recorded in the front pages of the agenda.

Social - We had completed our in depth study of the different regions within Alberta; however, upon further reflection, it was determined that we needed to re-visit this topic.  We have just recently completed a paper "Passport" of information for the different regions.  On the whole, students completed this very well.  We will be wrapping up the formal study of the regions after the break and will be having a test on them mid-January.

Science - We are well into our lights and Shadows unit.  The students are enjoying the various experiments using the flashlights.  You could say they have 'seen the light'.  we will be completing this unit near the middle of January, so be prepared for another unit final exam.

This is the last post for 2016.  We are soon to be heading into the Christmas movie for our special treat this week.  My wish for all of you is a blessed, healthy Christmas season and a most interesting 2017.

Merry Christmas!
