October Update... to the 14th!

Welcome to October...although it may appear to be more like December! Hopefully it warms up a bit so this snow can melt and the farmers can finish the harvest.

Since the snow and cool temperatures have hit,  I encourage you to remind your child that warm winter clothing is required in weather conditions like these. Many of 4C's students have not been wearing coats, boots, hats or mitts/gloves, and when recess is over these students are cold and wet.  We do not have any heaters to dry articles of clothing between recesses, so if a student is wet from the first recess, they are even wetter after the lunch recess.  This does not allow them to focus on their work, as they are too uncomfortable to concentrate.

Our Language Arts program has been focussing on subjects and predicates - locating them in sentences, completing them, identifying simple subjects or simple predicates within complete phrases.  We have also discussed adjectives helping to identify subjects, adverbs helping to identify predicates and verb tense.

In addition to this, we have worked with simple sentences and compound sentences.  We have learned how to identify simple sentences from compound sentences; how to combine simple sentences to make compound sentences and which words help us to know when a sentence is a compound  sentence.

We have been focussing on the main idea  of a piece of text that we have read.  We have used underlining and highlighting as ways to help us find supporting details for main idea. Once we have identified the main idea and supporting sentences, we have written a summary of the text.

We have also been working on the common long vowel sounds in our word work.

In math, we have begun working on place value.  We are refreshing our memories with ones, tens, hundreds and thousands and will be including ten thousands soon.  We will be progressing to multiple digit addition with regrouping soon. math tests from the pattern unit will be sent home tomorrow.  Please review these with your student, sign the test paper and return it to the school by the end of the week.

Social Studies has the students learning about the different regions of Alberta and creating a google slides show to present to their  classmates by the end of October.  The students are responsible for completing the research to provide us with accurate information as well as photos that depict Alberta's landscapes, vegetation, recreation and leisure activities, climate, bodies of water and any other information that is very interesting about that region.  These can be worked on at home also, as the project is created in the student's google drive.  It is not homework.

Science has us completing several experiments that are quite lengthy. Thanks to all families who contributed to our collection of the fast food restaurant garbage!  We have 3 more experiments underway an one research task.  The research task is a homework assignment as the student is required to find out what happens to the garbage from his/her residence after the garbage truck picks it up.  Please ask your child about this if you have not yet seen it. Research Task 1 is to be handed in on Friday, October 21.

We will be hosting our first round of Parent-Teacher Interviews.  Please use this link to book your time to come and visit with me.   http://rbes.blackgold.ca/calendar/activities/   Also, please bring your student to the interview so that he/she acn participate in the planning for his/her success.
